34 Miles in One Day: A Personal Reflection on My First Rachel Carson Trail Challenge

Details

Each June since 1996, hikers have taken to the torturous hills north of Pittsburgh, PA to attempt the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge, a 34-mile endurance hike. Follow along as a middle-aged biology teacher from West Virginia joins a group of high school students from Western Pennsylvania as they go for it.

If you’re a veteran of the Challenge or any similar physical endeavor, you will find descriptions of the thoughts and feelings that you, too, may have experienced. If you’re thinking about taking the Challenge this year or sometime in the future, you’ll gain valuable insights to help you prepare for what may be the toughest day of your life. If the Challenge is not within the realm of possibilities for you, you will still be able to vicariously follow mile by mile as the group strives to complete the entire trail.
